The Green Houses

Brighton, England

Ongoing

This small development of two homes on the cliffs behind Brighton Marina is stitched into its surroundings without being overtly referential. The red brick, used in many traditional Sussex houses, is specific to the context, and the champagne-coloured window surrounds reflect the wall render at nearby Roedean School. Less visible, the building’s green credentials – which include enhanced insulation and air source heat pumps – are consistent with Brighton Council’s sustainability agenda.

Unfolding around a central column, the building is terraced to step back into the chalk hillside, creating large seaward-facing terraces and giving privacy to golfers on the putting green behind. Thoughtful details – benches in the covered porch and mortar that recedes in tone up the building towards the sky – further help to reinforce a sense of place and home.
