About us

Studio Octopi makes architecture with clear intent and entrepreneurial spirit.

We believe architecture’s a social, environmental and technical art, about simple ideas delivered to the greatest effect. It can enhance lives and address the most important issues of the day, and as a result people are the foreground and focus of our work.

We’re thoughtful and inventive in our work, but – like our buildings – we’ll always be approachable, able to translate complex technical and contextual challenges into succinct, relatable ideas.

We’re very aware of our responsibility to the environment, drawing lessons from nature to improve the performance of our buildings, and designing them to adapt over the longer term in response to life’s many variables.

Studio Octopi is a RIBA Chartered Practice & a member of the London Practice Forum.

Directors

Chris Romer-Lee

Chris is a born and bred Londoner and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He is most often found immersed in water. He studied architecture at the University of Plymouth and the Bartlett School of Architecture. The practice’s workplace design, private residential and water-based projects are all led by Chris.

Whilst bathing in Lake Zurich Chris had the idea for re-introducing swimming in the Thames and Thames Baths was conceived. Chris is globally recognised as an expert in urban swimming, access to water and tidal pools.

The practice’s water-based projects have provided a considerable platform to emphasise the importance of ‘blue’ spaces. Chris has spoken at AIA Center for Architecture (New York); Sydney Water’s Urban Plunge Tech Summit (Sydney), Swiss Architecture Museum (Basel), TEDx KPMG, (London), Centre for London Conference, London Design Festival and Palace of Westminster.

In August 2023 Chris’s first book was published by Batsford. ‘Sea Pools‘ is an ode to sea swimming – looking at the architecture, history and social significance of tidal pools around the world.

Chris was instrumental in establishing Future Lidos GroupLondon Modern.

James Lowe

James was born in Derbyshire. He studied architecture at the University of Plymouth and the Bartlett School of Architecture.

James has delivered a range of award-winning projects from private residential houses to arts building including Writ in Water, for the National Trust. A keen interest in material experimentation is at the heart of these projects.

James leads on the practice’s technical and material details. This combined with a keen interest in fabric first, low energy architecture has resulted in him recently completing the Passive House Designer Course.

James was a laureate in the 2010 ‘Europe 40 Under 40’ awarded by the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and has taught at London School of Architecture (LSA) & Kent University.

James’ hands on approach to architecture has led to his own retrofit project converting a 1915 bungalow into a low-energy 2 storey house. When not on the building site he can found in the mountains either walking or mountain biking.
