Tarlair Outdoor Pool
Macduff, Scotland
Ongoing
The large tidal pool at Tarlair, outside the town of Macduff, was one of the biggest in Scotland when built in the 1932, and has a spectacular location on a rocky coastline where access to the water is otherwise tricky. Working with the Friends of Tarlair, a community group formed to rescue the building, the restoration of the Category A-listed art deco tea pavilion will be the first phase of a project to bring the complex back to life.
In collaboration with heritage specialists, the modest concrete structure will be returned to its original appearance and condition, with cream painted concrete and peppermint metalwork. An unsympathetic 1970s extension will be replaced by a new structure with art deco styling but its own contemporary spirit, its green cladding reflecting the gorse and granite of the site. Inside will be a community studio space which connects to other flexible areas including a café.
